About Kate

I started writing at an early age, but I didn’t discover that my true passion was editing—in all of its forms, from idea generation to writing headlines to cutting articles to fit—until my final year as a journalism major at the University of Missouri. In the 10-plus years since graduation, I have honed my skills as a communications director and editor of a quarterly magazine at a nonprofit association. My responsibilities have included:

  • Supervising a team of writers, graphic designers and contract workers.
  • Editing a quarterly magazine, e-newsletters and other publications.
  • Developing and implementing communications strategies that reflect strategic plans as well as meet association standards and member needs.
  • Working with print vendors and the United States Postal Service.
  • Managing organizational social media efforts.
  • Working with vendors to launch mobile apps and microsites.
  • Using content management systems and broadcast email software.

In 2008, I was the recipient of a Rising Star Scholarship for professional development from the Angerosa Research Foundation. My colleagues and I received a 2009 Society of National Association Publications EXCEL Silver Award for our “Homeroom Heroes” convention marketing campaign, on which I served as the lead writer. In 2010, I received a Clarion Award from the Association for Women in Communications. The award, presented in the magazine regular informational/nonopinion column category, recognized my “Tech Support” columns from ATPE News. In 2013, Association Media & Publishing recognized “The Wolves Are Circling,” my editorial on private school vouchers, with a Silver EXCEL Award. And, in 2014, I received another Silver EXCEL Award in the magazine feature category for “How Can We Keep Kids Safe?” This ATPE News feature was a response to the Newtown, Connecticut, school shooting.
